Burning/Restrictions

Burning is NOT allowed in the Sherwood Fire District when we are very high or extreme fire danger or in RED FLAG Conditions. This includes campfires, charcoal fires or any other fire.

The Sherwood Forest Fire District is in Coconino County and abides by the fire restrictions set forth by the county. They can be found here.

Fire conditions of the Kaibab Forest are posted on a US Forest Service sign at the entrance to Sherwood Forest Estates or can be found at the USFS Kaibab Website. If we are in Red Flag Conditions (usually because of extreme wind), there will will be a red flag at the entrance.

If you plan to burn needles & branches on your property (when allowed), please inform the SFE Fire District (928 635-9837) and the US Forest Service in advance (928 635-5600).

Campfire

During safe burn conditions always use caution when burning: clear a large area (including above the burn area), have plenty of water handy (preferably a charged hose line), and be sure that your fire is really out when you leave it.

Campfire Rules – from Smokey the Bear

  • Make sure there are no burn bans and it’s not too windy.
  • Dig a pit away from overhanging branches.
  • Circle the pit with rocks.
  • Clear a 10-foot area around the pit down to the dirt, removing anything that could catch on fire.
  • Stack extra wood upwind and away from fire.
  • After lighting, throw the match into the fire.
  • Never leave a campfire unattended; an adult should supervise the campfire at all times.
  • Keep a bucket of water and shovel nearby. (OR a charged hose.)
  • Never put anything but wood into the fire.
  • Do not pull sticks out of the fire.
  • Do not sit on the fire ring or rocks around the campfire. They will heat up quickly and they’ll stay hot for a long time.
  • When it’s time to put the fire out, dump lots of water on it, stir it with a shovel, then dump more water on it. Make sure it is COLD before leaving the campsite. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave!
